Watcher FAQs

The role of a watcher is to watch the integrity of the election.
Yes, the watcher must be qualified in the County in which they are authorized to act.
  • Name of the Candidate or Committee watcher is appointed to watch. 
  • Watcher’s name and address.
  • Watcher’s date of birth.
  • Election district watcher is assigned to watch in.
Yes, the date of birth is the key to distinguish the correct elector if there is more than one elector with that name.
Each candidate at a primary or election may appoint two (2) watchers for each election district where that candidate is on the ballot.
Each political party and political body which has a nominated candidate may appoint three (3) watchers at any general, municipal or special election for each election district where a candidate of such party or body is on the ballot.
The watcher is allowed in the polling place from the time that the election officers meet before the opening of the polls.
 Yes, the watcher certificate contains this statement;

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PRECINCT ELECTION OFFICERS
RECENT CHANGES IN THE LAW PERMIT THE PERSON NAMED ON THIS CERTIFICATE TO BE PRESENT AS A WATCHER IN VOTING PRECINCTS OTHER THEN THE ONE DESIGNATED ON THIS DOCUMENT.
Yes, ONE WATCHER for each candidate at primaries, or for each party or political body at general, municipal or special elections, shall be present in the polling place at any one time.
 
Yes, the Judge of Elections shall permit watchers, upon request, to view the voting check list, and the two numbered list of voters as long as there are no voters present in the polling place.
All watchers are allowed within the polling place outside the enclosed space while the ballots are being counted or voting machines canvassed.
The watcher can remain inside until the counting of votes is completed and the district register and voting checklist have been locked and sealed.
